Ingredients

  • 8 ounces ziti pasta tubular shape ideal for capturing sauce and cheese
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for sautéing the chicken and adding richness
  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts diced into bite-size pieces
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder adds depth and aroma
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder brings subtle sweetness
  • salt and pepper to taste, for seasoning
  • 1 cup marinara sauce choose your favorite brand or homemade
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese creamy and mild
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese melts beautifully for gooey texture
  • 0.5 cup grated Parmesan cheese sharp and nutty, perfect for finishing
  • 0.25 cup chopped fresh basil optional, for a bright, herbal note
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning a blend of herbs that adds authentic flavor

Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Large skillet or sauté pan
  • Baking dish (9x13 inch)
  • Colander
  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the ziti pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente, about 8-10 minutes. Drain the pasta and set aside.
  2. While the pasta cooks, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the diced chicken, season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes.
  3. Reduce heat to low, then add marinara sauce to the skillet with the chicken. Stir to combine and warm through for 2 minutes. In a large mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, half of the mozzarella, and half of the Parmesan cheese. Add the cooked pasta and the chicken with marinara sauce, stirring gently to mix everything evenly.
  4. Transfer the pasta mixture into your baking dish. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses evenly over the top. If using fresh basil, sprinkle it on now for a pop of color and flavor.
  5. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the assembled ziti uncovered for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown on top.
  6. Let the baked ziti rest for 5 minutes before serving. This allows the dish to set slightly, making it easier to scoop and enjoy. Pair with a crisp green salad or garlic bread for a full meal.

Notes
