Ingredients

For the Filling:
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil for sautéing
  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • ½ cup tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup water
  • 4 pieces hamburger buns

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

Cooking Instructions:
  1. In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the diced onion and green bell pepper. Sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened and fragrant.
  2. Add the 1 pound of ground chicken to the skillet. Use your wooden spoon to break it apart as it cooks. Sprinkle in ½ teaspoon of kosher salt and continue cooking until the chicken is fully cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and 1 teaspoon of chili powder, cooking for an additional minute until the garlic becomes aromatic.
  4. Add in the ½ cup ketchup, 1 tablespoon mustard, ½ cup tomato paste, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, and ½ cup water. Stir everything together until well combined.
  5. Allow the mixture to simmer gently for about 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. While the filling is simmering, lightly toast the hamburger buns in a toaster or under the broiler for a couple of minutes until golden brown.
  7. Spoon the chicken mixture generously onto the toasted buns. Serve immediately while hot, and enjoy your delicious Chicken Sloppy Joes!

Notes

  • Make sure to cook the chicken thoroughly—no pink should remain.
  • Adjust the seasoning as needed; taste the mixture before serving.
  • Don't skip the simmering step; it's essential for developing the flavors.
