Ingredients

  • 8 beef frankfurters with natural casing
  • 8 hot dog buns
  • 1 cup sauerkraut rinsed and drained
  • 1 cup onions finely chopped
  • spicy brown mustard to taste

Equipment

  • Large pot or skillet
  • Small saucepan
  • Knife and chopping board
  • Tongs
  • Serving platter or plates

Method

Prepare the Sauerkraut and Onions
  1. Rinse the sauerkraut under cold water to reduce excess saltiness. Drain well and warm gently in a small saucepan over low heat. Finely chop the onions and set aside.
Cook the Beef Frankfurters
  1. Bring a large pot of water to a gentle simmer. Cook the beef frankfurters for 5-7 minutes until heated through. Alternatively, grill the frankfurters for 4-5 minutes until slightly charred, turning occasionally.
Prepare the Hot Dog Buns
  1. Lightly toast the hot dog buns on a skillet or grill for 1-2 minutes to add texture and prevent sogginess.
Assemble the Coney Island Hot Dog (The Original)
  1. Place each cooked beef frankfurter inside a toasted bun. Spoon warm sauerkraut on top. Sprinkle chopped onions evenly over the sauerkraut. Drizzle or spread spicy brown mustard along the hot dog. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • Toast buns lightly before assembling to prevent sogginess from toppings.
  • Rinse and drain sauerkraut well to balance tanginess and reduce saltiness.
  • Grill frankfurters for added smoky flavor, but avoid overcooking to keep them juicy.
  • Substitute turkey or chicken frankfurters for a lighter protein option.
  • Try caramelized onions or kimchi as flavorful topping alternatives.
