Ingredients

  • 1 block extra-firm tofu (12-16 ounces)
  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce or liquid aminos
  • 1 teaspoon seasoning of choice e.g., garlic powder, smoked paprika

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Mixing bowl
  • Knife
  • Cutting board

Method

  1. Start by draining the tofu. Wrap the block in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and place a heavy object on top to press out excess moisture. Let it sit for about 15-20 minutes.
  2. Once pressed, slice the tofu into cubes or rectangles, depending on your preference.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the soy sauce or liquid aminos with the oil and your choice of seasoning. Toss the tofu pieces in this mixture until they’re well coated. Allow them to marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle the cornstarch over the marinated tofu, tossing gently to ensure each piece is evenly coated.
  5. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, then spread the tofu pieces in a single layer. Bake for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Remove the tofu from the oven and let it cool slightly. Serve it hot as a snack, or toss it into your favorite salad or stir-fry.

Notes

  • Always press the tofu for at least 15 minutes for optimal crispiness.
  • For a different flavor, experiment with various seasonings.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
