In a large pot, boil salted water and cook the whole-grain penne until al dente, then drain.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked penne, marinara sauce, halved cherry tomatoes, salt, pepper, and half of the shredded mozzarella cheese. Stir until evenly coated.
Pour the pasta mixture into the 9x13-inch baking dish. Spread it out evenly and top with the remaining mozzarella cheese and torn basil leaves.
Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for about 25-30 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving warm.
