Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons Nutella or your favorite chocolate hazelnut butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1.5 teaspoons sugar or your choice of sweetener
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 dash sea salt

Equipment

  • Microwave-safe Mug
  • Fork or whisk
  • Microwave
  • Measuring spoons

Method

  1. In your microwave-safe mug, add 2 tablespoons of Nutella. Crack open a large egg and mix it into the Nutella using a fork or whisk until well combined. The mixture should be smooth and creamy.
  2. Add 1 ½ teaspoons of sugar (or your sweetener of choice) to the Nutella and egg mixture. This will ensure a delightful sweetness to your cake.
  3. Next, sprinkle in 1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder along with ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract. Don’t forget that dash of sea salt! The salt enhances the chocolate flavor and balances the sweetness.
  4. Stir all the ingredients together until you achieve a uniform batter. Make sure there are no lumps of cocoa powder or Nutella left. The final mixture should be thick but pourable.
  5. Place the mug in the microwave and cook on high for about 1 minute. Keep an eye on it as microwaves can vary in power. You’re looking for a cake that has risen and is set in the middle.
  6. Let your mug cake cool for a minute or so (it will be hot!). You can enjoy it straight from the mug or transfer it to a plate. For an extra indulgent treat, consider adding a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream on top.

Notes

  • For a vegan version, substitute the egg with a flax egg or unsweetened applesauce.
  • Feel free to add mix-ins like chocolate chips or nuts for extra flavor.
  • Microwave times can vary; check the cake to avoid overcooking.
