Ingredients

For the Cake:
  • 1 box white cake mix plus ingredients required to prepare the cake
  • 1 box brownie mix (9x13" pan size), plus ingredients required to prepare the brownies
  • 2 ounces semi-sweet chocolate broken into pieces
  • 7 ounces sweetened condensed milk (half of a 14-ounce can)
  • 1 8-ounce package cream cheese at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer
  • Rubber spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

Instructions
  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures that your cake bakes evenly.
  2. Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, prepare the brownie mix according to package instructions. Pour the brownie batter into your greased 9x13-inch pan, spreading it evenly. Set aside for now.
  3. Step 3: In another bowl, prepare the white cake mix according to the package instructions. Once mixed well, carefully pour the cake batter over the brownie layer in the pan.
  4. Step 4: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for about 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  5. Step 5: While your cake is baking, prepare the creamy topping. In a medium mixing bowl, beat together the cream cheese and unsalted butter until smooth. Add in the vanilla extract, powdered sugar, and milk, mixing until creamy.
  6. Step 6: In a small microwave-safe bowl, combine the semi-sweet chocolate pieces and sweetened condensed milk. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until melted and smooth.
  7. Step 7: Once the cake has cooled completely, spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the top. Drizzle the chocolate mixture on top, creating a beautiful pattern.
  8. Step 8: Slice into squares and serve this Vintage Brownie Surprise Cake at your next event!

Notes

  • Wrap individual slices in plastic wrap and aluminum foil to freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Thaw slices in the refrigerator overnight before serving.
  • You can freeze the entire cake, but it’s best to frost it after thawing for the best texture.
